Scientists Identified 4 Types of Couples and the Fate of Their Relationships


Scientists from the University of Illinois conducted an experiment on 376 couples in love. They tried to understand how people’s feelings change over time and observed each pair for about 9 months. As a result of the experiment, 4 main types of couples were identified.

They identified 4 main types of couples and how their relationships usually develop:

1.Conflict, but in love

This is your type of relationship where: You spend quite a lot of time together. Your meetings are always full of passion. Your union is characterized by frequent quarrels and passionate reconciliation. The level of your feelings is constantly changing. You run away for a while, start missing each other, and rush into each other’s arms again.

Such couples are constantly in a state of “everything is complicated,” . But they don’t break up more often than other types of couples.

2.Drama lovers

This is your type of relationship where: These couples tend to separate at twice the frequency than the other groups. Less than half of those couples who participated in the experiment were married. In these relationships there are many ups and downs, decisions are impulsive and, based on negative experiences, most often partners prefer to spend time apart with their own groups of friends and loved ones.


Members of such couples break up twice as often as others. Less than half of such couples participating in the experiment got married.

3.Social relations

This is your type of relationship where: This high index is due to the strength of this relationship, which is always based on friendly feelings.  Social networking addicts communicate through social networks often, have a good group of friends, often meet up for fun times, and feel comfortable to talk about anything to each other. You are a very sociable couple and have many friends you hang out with together.The ideal evening for you is to play Monopoly with friends, cook dinner together, or hang out in a nightclub until dawn.

Such relationships are considered quite strong because they are based on friendly feelings. 2/3 of couples in the experiment got married.

4.Strongly connected to each other

This is your type of relationship where: You spend a lot of time together. Have common hobbies and interests.  Deliberately make decisions regarding the development of your relationship. have the same views on where and how to spend your vacation. You try to resolve conflicts by looking for a compromise.

This type of relationship turned out to be the happiest: 90% of the participating couples created strong families.

Conclusion of the scientists

Through these results, the scientists were able to conclude that the feelings of the first group lasting for a very short time., and that the difficulties of the second group also lead to terms, most of the time. However, the third and fourth group usually hold together and create healthy and happy families. 

Of course, the ideal formula does not exist, and each relationship is unique, but when we understand our relationship, we can make positive changes and create happier relationships.
